Florida's 14-day rule: miss it and you can lose up to $10,000 in PIP benefits
- Florida is still a no-fault state. After a crash, your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays first — up to $10,000 toward medical bills and lost wages — regardless of who caused the collision.
- There is a strict 14-day deadline. Under Florida law, you must be seen by a qualifying medical provider within 14 days of the crash, or you can lose your PIP medical benefits entirely.
- PIP has limits. It covers 80% of reasonable medical expenses up to the $10,000 cap; for a serious injury, a claim against the at-fault driver’s bodily-injury coverage may be needed to pursue fuller compensation.
- Lawmakers have repeatedly proposed ending PIP, but no repeal has passed. The rules that apply to your claim are the ones in effect on the date of your crash — a free case review helps you understand how the current law applies to you.
